Keeping your teeth healthy isn’t rocket science. While it might take nearly a decade to become a dentist, everyone learns what it takes to keep teeth clean and healthy when they’re young. Brushing twice per day, flossing daily, drinking plenty of water, and eating healthy food. However, many people aren’t aware of some daily habits that could be taking a toll on their teeth. Here, we’ll look at 3 things you never realized were bad for your teeth.
1. Chomping on ice.
It’s not uncommon to grab a few pieces of ice from your drink and start chewing on them. Unfortunately, this can lead to fractures and cracks in your teeth. If you have a filling, this habit could even cause damage to that. While our teeth are strong, they’re not designed to bite down on something so hard. You should either let the ice melt before drinking or simply leave it out of your water.
2. Drinking juice
Fruit juice is great for your overall health, so it stands to reason that it would be good for your teeth. Despite being full of antioxidants and vitamins, most fruit juices are also very high in acidity and sugar – both of which are detrimental to the health of your teeth. Sugars naturally occurring in fruit are bad enough, so try to stick with juices that have no added sugar. You could always pour some water into the juice to dilute the strength.
3. Brushing right after eating
It sounds counterintuitive, but brushing your teeth right after drinking or eating something high acidity levels can be detrimental to the health of your teeth. Teeth are porous in nature and brushing right after intaking some acidity can actually push the acid further into the enamel. It’s important to thoroughly rinse your mouth with water and wait at least an hour before brushing your teeth after eating or drinking acidic foods or liquids.
Keeping your teeth healthy is just as much about refraining from doing harmful things as it is implementing healthy habits. These 3 practices are just a few common habits that you might not be aware of that are negatively impacting your teeth.
