When most people smile, very little of their upper gums actually show. But for some people, their upper lip goes higher and exposes more of their upper gums. Termed a “gummy smile,” it can make people self-conscious of their appearance. While in years past little could have been done to solve this problem, an exciting new treatment option known as lip repositioning can create the smile of your dreams.

What is Lip Repositioning?
Originally used on denture patients to develop a well-fitting denture while helping adjust to bone loss, lip repositioning has taken advantage of innovative developments in cosmetic dentistry so that it can now be used on a variety of patients.

How Does it Work?
When a person undergoes lip repositioning, a small area of tissue inside and under the upper lip is removed. By doing so, the upper lip is no longer able to rise higher than normal. As a result, it will rest at an ideal point between the upper teeth and upper gum line.

Are There Other Options?
Yes, but they are very invasive or cannot completely correct the problem. While laser therapy can be used to remove gum tissue, it can only do so much to correct a person’s smile. Along with this treatment option, surgery can be done to reset the upper jaw, although this is complex and the least desirable of treatment options.

Who Can Perform Lip Repositioning?
Lip repositioning is performed by an experienced oral surgeon. With many patients, lip repositioning is combined with laser therapy of the gums and veneers.
